GGAP e.V.

About GGAP

Gemeinsam gegen Armut auf den Philippinen (GGAP) e.V. (Together Against Poverty on the Philippines) awards scholarships for the vocational education of deprived youths in the slums and rural areas of the Philippines.

GGAP is a registered NGO and officially recognized charity in Germany. Its predecessor was the 'Partnership for fair education', a private initiative of then-medical student Sebastian Spinner that had been funding education in developing countries since 2001.

In the early days between 2002 and 2015, we supported elementary school and some vocational trainings of 15 orphan children in Uganda, Africa. Because more and more people donated to the project, we were able to expand and award scholarships on the Philippines from 2004. Sebastian spent part of his medical school training on the Philippines. We now focus entirely on the Philippines.

Since 2001, 1535 scholarships were awarded to deprived young people, including 1512 vocational trainings on the Philippines. Each and every scholarship is an opportunity to work one's way out of poverty.

Collaboration with training centers

We work closely with local training centers that provide the infrastructure and staff for the actual vocational training. Currently the Salesians are our partner. They have a strong base on the Catholic Philippines and offer various courses and on-the-job trainings. Although we do have tight emotional, personal, and organizational links with the Church, we are independent and not confined to working with the Catholic Church. Church membership is not important when you apply for membership in Germany, as it is not important when you apply for a scholarship on the Philippines.

Eligible scholars are identified by social workers on site according to our criteria which include poverty, talent, social commitment and the family situation. The training centers send us progress reports.

Information in Germany

We want to increase the awareness of poverty on the Philippines here in Germany. We work with German school classes to set up sponsorships for Philippine students.

Our logo was designed by German student Margarete Meinhold who one our logo competition at Theresienschule, Berlin.

Donors trust us because we have a track record of using 100 % of the donated money with no administrative overhead. The little money that we need to run the NGO (such as costs for this web server, for example) is spent by board members on top of their donations for the Philippines.

We are not confined to sponsoring vocational education at training centers. Other local projects that pursue the same goal of helping deprived young people may also be funded in the future.

We cooperate with the following vocational training centers:

  • (Suba) Pasil (Cebu City)
  • Punta Princesa (Cebu City)
  • Balamban (on the West coast of the isle of Cebu)
  • Mati City (Davao Oriental/Mindanao)
  • Liloan (north of Cebu City)
  • Minglanilla (south of Cebu City)
  • Dumangas

Vorsitzender
Sebastian Spinner

47 Jahre, verheiratet, 3 Kinder, Berliner, Kinderarzt/ Kinderkardiologe/ Kinderintensivmediziner/ Kinderdiabetologe, Notarzt, Palliativmediziner, Diplom in Tropenmedizin (DTM&H Liverpool).

Networking

Two members of the founding committee (Sebastian Spinner und Daniel Kraus) used to be Cusanuswerk scholars. GGAP is an independent, non-religious organization, but the Christian background that we are coming from influences our work.

Sebastian Spinner's project "Partnerschaft für Gerechte Bildung" (partnership for fair education) won the 2011 Cusanus Award, a biennial prize for outstanding social commitment. The prize money was used entirely for scholarships.

The Initiative Teilen im Cusanuswerk e.V. has been supporting our work since 2012.
